Introduction

If you're like me, food is a comfort. Even though I have tried the low-carb diet in the past (with some short-term success), limiting my carbohydrate intake is not a viable option because: (#1) if you exercise regularly, you need the energy (#2) I'm a junk food junkie and it is not realistic for me to refrain from the taste of sugar, salt, and starch. The beautiful thing is that it is not necessary if you watch your portions, eat in moderation, find low-fat alternatives, and exercise. It's all about lifestyle changes and teaching yourself how to eat more healthy.

A food journal is an excellent way to educate yourself.

Week #1

Okay, I'm going to try this again! The last nine weeks were a failure. On the bright side, maybe now I am mentally ready to do this.

MOTIVATION is the key ingredient to healthy weight loss or I'm doomed!

(1/29 - 2/4/06)

Okay, this burrito for lunch tastes so good. I just walked 3 miles and burned 690 calories, but did something stupid! Tried to exercise without adequate nutrition (for breakfast I had applesauce and pudding) . . . that's a no-no if you're going to work out. Starving yourself and exercise do not go hand-in-hand. There's no way to exercise without eating. Food is energy! By the end of my 2nd mile I was shaky, hungry, and not enjoying myself because I was hungry. I forced myself to do the 3rd mile because I'm on a training schedule with my little sister (we're 4 1/2 years apart and she just had a baby 5 months ago (Labor Day - ha, ha).

That was gone too soon. I'm going to have to do better tomorrow. Bring a more balanced lunch. Meanwhile, I'm sipping my Capri Sun . . . sl-----oooo---wwwly.

I had a cup of Yoplait chocolate mousse style "Whips" yogurt in the fridge at work. It's amazing how dairy "fills" you and comforts your stomach (after the burrito, I was still hungry).

* * *

It's Friday. I'm going to have to learn to say "no." Since, I'm trying to eat better, I know not to go buy chocolate. In fact, this morning I stopped at the grocery and bought fruit (raisins, fruit bowls). I would have been fine until I went into another department of where I work and there was a big container of Hershey's Kisses and Reese's mini cups on the table (for Valentine's Day). Surroundings are another culprit (I didn't succumb to the smell of Popeye's chicken while out running errands for lunch, even though they have a limited time shrimp basket special); however, the chocolate got me. I'll have to make sure I work out when I get home . . . the chocolate always wins ( I grabbed a handful) . . . for now.

Eating chocolate not because I'm craving it right now, but I had easy access.

(2/5 - 2/11/06)

I started Taebo on Wednesday. It was very invigorating and I enjoyed it. I felt all the muscles in my body. My abs and back muscles were sore. I haven't really been working my upper body out.

"An hour long Tae Bo workout will burn 500 to 800 calories, compared with the 300 to 400 calories burned with a more conventional

aerobics class." - http://www.vanderbilt.edu/AnS/psychology/health_psychology/TAEBO.htm
